Menihek High School, Labrador City

On April 17th, a two-hour songwriting workshop was conducted at Menihek High School in Labrador City for French Immersion students. The workshop included free creativity exercises, ‘la constellation’ exercises, and writing lines for verse and chorus. Participants were divided into groups and guided in finding a central idea for their song. The workshop also covered rhythm and style elements, including meter, metaphor, and personification. The performance included a solo one-hour set of original French songs and covers, with French immersion and core French students participating. The students enjoyed the day of creativity and expression.

Queen of Peace Middle School, Happy Valley-Goose Bay

On April 16th, a 2-hour songwriting workshop was conducted at Queen of Peace Middle School in Happy Valley-Goose Bay for grade 7 students. The workshop included free creativity exercises, ‘la constellation’ exercises, and group work on writing lines for verse and chorus. Participants also explored rhythm and style elements. The workshop concluded with a solo performance of original French songs and covers, featuring a larger crowd. The wireless mic allowed for easy movement and participation, with students dancing, singing, and clapping. The day was a great day of creative expression for French Immersion students.31 students took part in the workshop and 132 students at the concert.

On April 14th, two one-hour songwriting workshops were held at Mealy Mountain High School in Happy Valley-Goose Bay for grades 10 and 12. Participants engaged in free creativity exercises, ‘la constellation’, and writing lines for verse and chorus. The workshop ended with a performance in the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre, featuring original French songs and covers. French immersion students from other grades also participated, singing and clapping. The day was filled with creativity and expression, with students enjoying the show and playing the tambourine for some songs. 27 students participated in 2 workshops, and 47 students attended the concert.

Activities took place at Clarenville High School and Clarenville Middle School on April 11th and 12th. These sessions were aimed at engaging students from grades 7 to 12 in creative songwriting exercises and music performance.

April 11th Workshops:

    • Workshop 1 (Grades 10 and 7): 27 students

    • Workshop 2 (Grade 11): 18 students

    • Workshop 3 (Grades 12 and 8): 36 students

    • Workshop 4 (Grade 9): 24 students

  • April 12th:

    • Workshop: 33 students

    • Concert: 82 students


This was a wonderful opportunity to foster creativity and musical expression among students, and I look forward to future projects with the Clarenville schools.
